Basic Principles to Success

This post will cover fundamental principles of successful people. It’s essential that you know what you need to do to become successful. The answer is to find those traits successful people have and copy them. You may have read this advice a thousand times before, but have you ever followed the advice? It may seem simple, but the fact is if you do, you can achieve surprising results.

“Ninety-nine percent of all failures come from people who have a habit of making excuses.”
George Washington Carver

1. Attitude is Everything

You need to have the right attitude to be a winner. Very few people have a positive attitude all the time. When you meet them you’ll recognize them right away because they are positive, they talk positively, they’re fun to be around, and always work on improving themselves. They see opportunities all around them, most importantly, they make you feel good about yourself. Attitudes are contagious, so if you’re associating with people with great attitudes, the odds are that you will develop a good attitude also. A billionaire mentor of mine said he would pinch himself whenever he made a negative comment; his goal was to go 24 hours without ever having to pinch himself. Any human will have a negative thought occasionally, but the secret is not to entertain it and never speak it.

On the other hand, having friends with negative attitudes will ruin your chances of reaching success. Unfortunately, the majority of people are in this category. They see the world from a cynical point of view which kills their chances of ever becoming successful in business or their job. Can you recognize these traits? They complain about their spouse, their boss, their pay, their job, the weather, politics and on and on it goes. They don’t believe they have a chance of succeeding, so they don’t even try. It’s said, Birds of a feather flock together; you need to avoid people with negative attitudes even if it means getting new friends. Getting rid of a friend may seem harsh, but the reality is to keep your friends they will have to improve their attitudes, or you will inevitably have to part ways. Remember attitudes are contagious.

Here is an opportunity for you to develop your leadership skills.  Lead by example, by always being positive and building them up when they speak confidently, and by stopping them when they are trash talking. Let them know you cannot participate when your acquaintances are in a negative atmosphere. If they want to keep your friendship, they will have to work on seeing the positive side of the world.

I had a mentor who taught me to always talk about the things that are right and not talk about what’s wrong. Back then I thought the idea of constructive criticism was a good thing, I soon learned from my mentor that there is no such thing as constructive criticism, all criticism is destructive. Have you ever been in the situation when you have an annual review with your boss, and you had a great year overall? But there might have been a couple of mistakes since your last review. You probably experienced the manager concentrating on criticizing the couple of errors you made instead of focusing on all the right things you did that year. You leave the meeting feeling lousy and demoralized even though you performed well that year. That’s an example of criticism being destructive.

Your job is to seek out individuals with a POSITIVE ATTITUDE and surround yourself with as many as possible.  People with positive attitudes will lift you and condition you to become a leader, a winner, and a motivator. You must believe you can be successful, by focusing your attention on finding mentors who have achieved success and copying them, you will be making a positive change in the right direction.

There is an old saying “Winners win and Loser’s loose.” There’s a lot of truth to this comment; you will win if you make a conscious effort to make the necessary changes to become a winner. There are thousands of books and articles written on the subject of becoming a winner. There’s no doubt that winners share many of the same principles.

Much of what you’ll read in this post may have been read by you before, that’s okay because every time you re-read something you remind yourself of what you need to do to achieve your goals. It takes repeated exposure before something becomes embedded in your mind. To reinforce your commitment to change make a list of affirmations that you will read aloud two times a day. Here is a couple of suggestions to begin with:

  • I will not have or participate in negative thoughts
  • I will take the time to read something positive every day.

My goal is to assist you in reaching your goals using proven techniques. You need to make a leap of faith and act as if you have already met your goals.

It begins by analyzing your life and the decisions you have made in the past. Changing your course of action especially if you are unhappy with the results you’ve achieved so far. Losers will always find excuses and are quick to place blame on other people or circumstances for their poor results. The reality is anyone can be a winner. Decide what you want, take action and above all, believe in yourself. You deserve the results you get. Unexpected events will inevitably happen, it’s unavoidable. The secret is how you react to them and take control of the results. Everyone does the best they can with what they know at the time. Real learning happens after you understand and apply the new information.

2.  Accept Responsibility

A loser will say he didn’t succeed because; Somebody or something else is always to blame. They won’t accept responsibility.

A winner will say; I accept responsibility for my actions. What do I need to change to get the results I want?

Successful people always follow principles that are known to work. But you must follow them consistently.  Follow a successful person in the field you wish to succeed in and copy them. This suggestion may seem too simple, but almost all successful people will tell you they found a mentor and followed their mentor’s directions.  By connecting with successful people, you will develop habits from their experience and learn what works as well as what doesn’t. You should embrace change as you copy the methods of your mentors. It’s nearly impossible to build a lasting success entirely on your efforts.

3. Take Action

Your success will depend solely on whether you move forward by taking action or you will fall behind through inaction. By not taking action you are indicating that you are satisfied with your life, your job, and your income. If you are not satisfied, then you need to start to make changes to improve your life. The adjustments may include changing habits, what you think about, how you dress, what you read and how you talk. Every decision you make is under your control, and taking action is all you need to do to achieve your goals. The bottom line is, stop looking around for the answers as to why you have not created the standard of living you want because it’s you who produced the quality of life you have. You must accept one hundred percent responsibility for the results you have. Accept the fact that you alone are the cause of the results.

If you recognize that the results you have created so far are because of you, you’ll realize that you can control the future you want. You can work on undoing your present situation and redoing it as you wish. Admit to yourself that you always had control of producing the results you wanted. For some reason, you chose not to take control. Why you didn’t doesn’t matter. Let bygones be bygones. All that is required now is for you to take action and establish a new direction for your future. If you keep doing what you’ve always done, you’ll continue getting what you always got. If you decide to stay on the same course your on, take responsibility for your decision and don’t complain. Just remember you can take the chance to create the life you always wanted.

The key to winning is to keep trying. There is no cost to thinking big, but it could cost you everything to do nothing. Those who have taken action and succeeded talk about how beautiful it is to achieve the goals they set and how happy they are to have finally made a difference in their lives.

4. Passion

Having a passion for what you do makes it easy to get out of bed in the morning. When you have passion and love what you’re doing, you’re willing to do it for free, and it’s effortless to keep doing it. It’s like your job is your hobby and it’s fun.

Follow your heart and do something you love and you’ll always be happy. If it happens to make you wealthy along the journey, then you’re a two-time winner. It can’t get much better than that.

5. Focus

When you’ve found your passion, it will be effortless to stay focused on your specialty and become an expert at it. If you try to be a Jack of all trades, you will not become a master of any of them. You can’t remain focused if your mind is all over the place. It also dilutes your ability to stay focused. Life is full of ups and downs. Somedays everything is going your way, other days no matter what you do, things just don’t go right. It’s easy to keep charging when it’s going your way and not so easy when it seems like everything is wrong. When this happens, take a moment and breathe deeply, think about what you want and regain your focus and you will be on the right track again.

Add this thought to your daily affirmations;

  • I will not let distractions take my eye off the ball. I will refocus my gameplan until I’ve completed it.

It’s tough enough to be successful in one specialty,  so forget to try to be successful at everything.

6. Good Communicator

When you are a good communicator people will listen to you because your words will illuminate what people are feeling and thinking. People will consider you a teacher. They will believe that you are knowledgeable of your topic and that’s very important. That’s what people want; People will pay more attention and listen to your every word because they also want to be better people.

Typically, an experienced leader’s success is based on his/her ability to focus on the business fundamentals. There’s no secret here. Regardless of the topic, the best leaders are outstanding communicators. Their words are clear and what they say promotes those values. The listeners will admire you and will follow your lead. If you want your audience to reach new levels of achievement, you must master the craft of clear communication.

Add this thought to your daily affirmations;

  • I am an excellent communicator. When I talk people enjoy listening to me and learn from my every word.

7. Failing Before Success

It’s very rare that someone will have overnight success. As I mentioned in another post, I failed four times before I reached success. My businesses may have failed, but in my mind I never did. I learned from the experiences and kept looking for the next opportunity. All experienced entrepreneurs know that it’s not always easy to succeed on the first try. The idea is to learn from the failures because it will help you in your next attempt, and it will be simpler to make better decisions in the long run. Winners win, and losers lose, they win because they do not give up after failing. A winner will adjust and continue making the necessary improvements until the job is completed.

My two favorite stories are Thomas Edison and Walt Disney.

8.  Goals

Setting goals are something everyone must do. Whether you are in business or not, you must set goals for yourself. Before the wealthy became highly successful, they had written goals for themselves. One of the characteristics of successful entrepreneurs is the result of having set goals at some point in their life.

The chances are that if you are reading this article, you are thinking of owning a business. If that’s the case, then you should write down as one of your goals that you want to own a business. By reading the goals every day, it will motivate you to take action. As you can see just taking action and writing your goals, you will already have two of the characteristics necessary to become successful.

In an upcoming article, I’ll be going into details on how to set good goals. Stay tuned.

Add this thought to your daily affirmations;

  • I will read my goals at the beginning and end of every day.

9. Motivation

The characteristics of taking Action, setting goals and motivation all work hand in hand with each other. Ninety percent of people don’t take action or write their goals. The result of inaction is they don’t get started even though they want to get ahead and reach what they think and dream about. If you do not want to be part of the ninety percent, Take Action, write your goals and if in your heart of hearts you feel you want these things bad enough it will motivate you to the point of accomplishing your goals.

Be thankful for every day your alive and decide that each day is the beginning of your new life. Today you will continue to improve in all areas of your life. It’s a great idea to begin and end each day by reading your positive affirmations and goals out loud.

A recap of the suggested affirmations:

  • I will not have or participate in negative thoughts.
  • I will take the time to read something positive every day.
  • I will not let distractions take my eye off the ball. I will refocus my gameplan until I’ve completed it.
  • I am an excellent communicator. When I talk people enjoy listening to me and learn from my every word.
  • I will read my goals at the beginning and end of every day.
